Multiple Myeloma, also known as myeloma or plasma cell myeloma, is cancer of the plasma cells - a kind of white blood cell which is present in the bone marrow. Plasma cells make antibodies called immunoglobulin which help fight off infections. A group of abnormal cells - myeloma cells - multiplies, elevating the number of plasma cells too high, which in turn results in excessively high levels of immunoglobulin. Multiple myeloma affects the bones, immune system, kidneys and red blood cell count.
